Advice from a career consultant
I got expelled from school – what can I do?
- You can only be expelled if you are over 16. You may enrol in another school but your school principal doesn’t have to help you find one and a new school can refuse to enrol you. You can be excluded or suspended if you are younger than 16, and different rules apply.
- Your local Ministry of Education office can help you find a new school or you could refer yourself to a local youth transition service. To find your nearest youth transition service, phone Career Services on 0800 222 733.
- Even after you leave school you may still have access to careers support staff and guidance counsellors at your school. Make the most of these knowledgeable and supportive people.
- It may be possible for you to enrol with The Correspondence School if you wish to continue with your school subjects. This is an e-learning environment, and subjects are similar to school.
- There are lots of youth training programmes run by private training providers that you can enrol in as well.
- You could consider finding a job. Career Services can help you with your CV and preparation for looking for a job.
