Advice from a career consultant
I just want to start earning an income
- First you’ll need a CV. Career Services can help you with that.
- Don’t rule out ongoing learning. Many industries enable you to gain qualifications on the job.
- Make sure there is another step up from the job you take, so you can progress.
- Whatever you do, it’s not going to be forever. In six to 12 months’ time, look at your position again, and get some more help from Career Services to plan your next step. This is like designing your own apprenticeship by trying a number of different jobs.
- Even though your immediate motivation is money, still consider doing something you enjoy.
- You could try working part time and continue with your school study. Gaining higher qualifications could mean better earning power later on.
- Have you talked to your family about your decision? Check with them that they are happy with your decision about leaving school too.
