My learning and career plan

Learning and career plans are a record of a student’s learning, career and personal goals. They include planned actions for achieving goals and a plan review.

Learning and career planning encourages the development of career management skills across the life-span. Successful planning relies on a substantial career education programme base to provide the learning outcomes for students.

This model of a learning and career plan is designed for Year 10 students.

My Goals / Ko Aku Whainga

A goal is like a target you want to aim for

Have you thought about what you might like to be doing in the future? What would you like to be? Write down your career goals.

Career goals

It’s OK if you don’t have a definite job or career in mind right now.

Examples:

  • Get an apprenticeship
  • Work with animals
  • Own my own business
  • Get a job using computers
  • Work overseas
  • Become a sports coach
  • Get a part-time job

Think about what you might need to do to help you learn new things and develop your experience. Write down as many learning and personal goals as you like that are important to you. They could help you with reaching your career goals.

Learning and personal goals

Learning is not just about school work. Think about other things you might do too!

Examples:

  • Achieve NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3
  • Learn te reo
  • Improve my reading and writing
  • Get my driving licence
  • Improve my confidence
  • Get work experience
  • Study at a university or polytechnic

Reach My Goals / Whakatutuki Whainga

A goal is like a target you want to aim for.

So you’ve got some targets to aim for. But you won’t hit them if you sit and wait for things to happen! Write down what you will need to do and by when. This might include taking lots of steps to help reach your goals.
I will...
Examples:
  • Practise my skills in ....
  • Talk to teachers/advisors about ....
  • Do more study!
  • Develop my study skills
  • Improve my attendance at school
  • Get some work experience in ...
  • Find part-time work
  • Write a CV

Some targets could be near and easy to hit.
Others could be far away and harder to reach.
Keep your eye on your targets!

Reality Check! / Tirohanga Motuhenga!

Answer these questions to make sure you are on the right track to reaching your goals.
What things About Me show that I could do what I want to do?

What could get in my way?

What could I do about it?
Talk this over with teachers at school and other people who know you well.

Year 13

Make sure your subject choices give you as many options as possible for the future.

You might need to talk this through with a teacher/advisor.

As you progress through your schooling try to record your thoughts and feelings about your progress towards your plan. You can note any changes to your plan here as you get clearer about your ideas.
