School visits
Each year, the Government funds a certain number of Career Services products and services for Year 7 and 8 schools and secondary schools under a Government Purchase Agreement. In 2001/02 funding was available for 50 consultation visits to Year 7 and 8 schools and 300 secondary schools.
The consultation visit programme is designed to add value to a school's ability to deliver career education. The Career Services consultant discusses the needs of the school and determines what resources and services can be provided.
Consultants provide access to advice and resources on:
- the world of work
- education, training and qualification options
- effective career planning and guidance models and theories
- transition issues
- interventions for at-risk learners
- best practice models for the planning, management and evaluation of school-based career programmes
- how to set up a dedicated and welcoming career information area
- how to involve parents in career information and guidance programmes.
Career Consultants can also help schools review their current career education programmes and look at ways of sharing best practice within a school.
For Year 7 and 8 schools, a pack of suggested classroom activities is available to help teachers deliver career education as part of Social Studies, English, Technology, Science, Maths, Art and Māori.
Consultants can also help schools organise career events and visits to local employers.
