Choosing a tertiary course
Your child is about to buy an education. As with all purchases, they will be looking to get the best value for money. It’s important for your child to think carefully about whether studying is the best option for them.

- Discuss tertiary study choices with your child
Things to consider
- What do they want to achieve by studying?
- Is studying the only way to achieve that goal?
- How does study fit into their life?
- What changes or compromises will they have to make to their life if they choose to study?
- Have they asked others for advice to help them make a good decision?
- What is their (and maybe your) current financial situation? How much of a financial commitment are they (or you) prepared to make toward their study?
- Can they afford to move away from home?
Which course is right for your child?
When deciding on a tertiary education provider, find out from the provider:
- What entry requirements are there for the course?
- What does the course cost? Is it possible to get a student loan?
- How long will the course take?
- Where do graduates with this qualification work?
- How well-recognised is this qualification in the workforce?
- What student support services does the education provider offer? (eg learning support, student unions, medical care, counsellors, library)
- What are the average living expenses in the town or city where the provider is?
Preparing to enter tertiary study
Moving into further study is an exciting time for your child and you, but it can also be scary. However, the more your child can do to prepare themselves, the more exciting it will become.
Action plans can help your child stay focused and organised. They’ll be able to see what needs to be done, make notes as reminders and tick each step off as they work through the plan.
