Professional development for teachers

Balmacewen Intermediate - students learn about the world of work by running a cafe

Balmacewen Intermediate school grounds and buildings.
At Balmacewen Intermediate, students operate their own cafe

Through a 10-week inquiry, Balmacewen Intermediate students investigated the process of planning, setting up and running a café. Before they began, students were encouraged to think about their "smarts" (talents and strengths) and then decide what responsibility to take within the café.

Key features

The café experience allowed students to gain an insight into at least three types of careers:

  • financial and business planning (setting up a budget and working out expenditure)
  • hospitality (barista and café services)
  • graphic design (creating posters).

At the end, students collated evidence of their work, and reflected on their contribution to the class café.

Benefits for students

  • Students were able to demonstrate other skills such as teamwork, planning, and organising.
  • Students reflected on their skill and talents and connected these with a work setting.
  • Gave students an insight into the many types of work roles within an industry, as well as practical work experiences.
