This is the first edition of this handbook. We intend it to be a living, evolving resource that we will grow and mature in the years to come.

What you will find in this handbook

This handbook is intended as a practical tool to assist schools to manage and develop their career education programmes.

It brings together findings from research with practical ideas and approaches that are being used in schools. It is designed to be used alongside Career Education and Guidance in New Zealand Schools (Ministry of Education, 2003).

The first part of the handbook presents information and suggestions related to career education management that could be useful in a wide range of school contexts.

The second part looks at an example of a well resourced and evaluated career education programme, the Designing Careers pilot: a two-year project in 75 secondary schools to develop and deliver career education for Year 10 students.
