Advice from a career consultant

I need help with English and maths but have left school

  • Perhaps at school there were other influences that made it difficult to learn. Or school didn’t suit your learning style, so don’t be scared to try again.
  • You may have a learning difficulty. You can get a free assessment from Literacy Aotearoa and get free one-on-one tuition if you do have a learning difficulty.
  • If you have missed out on literacy and numeracy while at school, foundation courses can help.
  • If you have a goal, this can give you an incentive to work on something you find difficult.
  • You may find hands-on, practical learning suits you better. Look into trades and industry training and learn on the job. You’ll get a qualification and earn a wage at the same time. You may need to do a pre-trade qualification to help you into this.
