Contrasting work environments create a perfect balance for Anja Foley

Anja Foley’s life drastically changes pace on Thursday mornings, when she alternates from her role as Wellington City Council's manager of recreation programmes to teacher at a small-town yoga centre.

“It’s a great life, because I really have the best of both worlds – having a professional job and the money that comes with it, and pursuing one of my life’s passions.”

Already a teacher at the local yoga studio, Anja was approached to take more classes and manage the studio for four months while the owner went overseas. “Initially the owner said it as a joke, thinking I wouldn’t be able to do it. I asked my boss at the council and he only had one week to decide. He said yes!” Anja says this is indicative of the council’s supportive approach to work-life balance and helping its employees with personal development.

Though Anja loves teaching yoga and running a business, she wouldn't give up her council job. “I have a lot of scope to implement beautiful programmes that impact a lot of people’s lives and recreation habits, and I have a wonderful team to work with.”

Besides getting satisfaction from both her jobs, Anja loves the different environments in which she works – the hustle and bustle of the city and the tranquility of the Kapiti Coast town where she lives. Though Anja feels less energetic when working full time (which involves a long commute into work), too much small-town life leaves her feeling disconnected.

With her current schedule she feels like she has found the perfect medium. “I love the balance that I have. I feel relaxed, positive and efficient in all areas of my life.”

No stranger to balancing work and life goals, Anja has spent the past three years studying Ayurvedic medicine while working full time. She has some advice for those considering something similar. “Try not to pursue everything outside of work, because that really puts a lot of pressure on.”

She also says you may have to take an income cut when taking time out for personal development, but this shouldn't stop you pursuing your goals. Nurturing personal growth and development can help you become a better person at work and at home. “You won’t miss the extra money. I notice I’m just so happy doing my volunteer community work, doing what I love and growing, that I don’t need that extra income.”
