Professional development and training day

A development and training day for teachers and career advisers was held in Hamilton on September 16. It included a catch-up on Career Services’ new area organisation, and participants also tried out some new, local resources for use in schools and learned a little bit of theory.

This theory included an outline of the "triangle model", which will become the basis of Career Services career planning and decision-making work in the future. We’ll spend more time looking at this model in the new year, and theory will likely be included in our future delivery and planning and support work.

The afternoon session was spent in a "hands-on" tour of the Career Services website. Participants were encouraged to introduce relevant areas of the recently expanded 'Educators and practitioners' section to their school’s guidance network, senior management team and curriculum group.

Effective use of the Career Services website

A professional development workshop was held on 22 September to help local school staff find out more about the Career Services website. The hands-on workshop was designed to show participants how the website could support their work, and be used to benefit students.

Participants included career advisers, who learned about recent additions to the site, and school staff new to the website.

User testing on 'Career education' section of website

Damien Banks ran a user testing session on the 'Career education' section on 24 September. The session was designed to find out what career leaders in schools thought about the resources and materials available to help schools plan and deliver career education programmes.

Participants said the section was an amazing resource, and it was good to be able to contribute ideas for this site.

Creating career education plans in schools workshop

A professional development and training workshop on career education plans (CEPs) was held in September. Teachers worked through an interactive process of writing a CEP, and learned why CEPs are important for the long-term sustainability of career education in schools.

  • Stage one focused on the importance of the CEP in the larger context of the school. Teachers brainstormed what they believed made up the components of a solid CEP.
  • Stage two looked at the mechanics of the CEP and aligning the career department strategic targets with the strategic goals of the school. Teachers worked on a document sort of career-related documents, which demonstrated the variety of documents that can help build a CEP.
