Navigate career event for Māori students
More than 400 students from mid and central Canterbury attended the second annual Navigate careers event on 13 August. Navigate is a Māori-specific careers event that targets local Year 10 students before they start making decisions about NCEA subject choices or about leaving school.
The event was organised by Career Services' Lesley Hooper-Simpson and Melanie Mark-Shadbolt from the Bio-Protection Research Centre. Students took part in interactive workshops with industry providers, and also got to hear motivational guest speakers.

Refreshed programme for Year 9 and 10 Pasifika students
Co-ordinated by Career Services’ Fuakoko Tanielu, Refreshed is a collaborative initiative with the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Institute of Technology (CPIT), Study Link and The Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs. The programme's aims are to help students make good subject choices for Year 11, and to encourage them to stay in school.
Refreshed is currently being run over two weeks with Pasifika students from 10 schools. The programme is offered as a day workshop for students, with the add-on of an evening session for families. The parent and student sessions look at the student's learning style, understanding the NCEA system and Pasifika education statistics in New Zealand. Participants also discuss any possible learning barriers and ways to overcome these.
