What’s been happening?

Māori and Pasifika careers day

At the end of Term 4 2009, 28 Year 9 and 10 Māori and Pasifika students from Marlborough Girls’ College attended a careers day led by Career Services staff from Nelson and Christchurch.

The day involved fun and interactive activities such as role plays, song and dance, and discussions to get students thinking about their futures. The students looked at their skills, interests, favourite ideas, and the subjects they might need to study to follow the type of careers they were interested in pursuing.

Career adviser/STAR co-ordinator Cheryl West from Marlborough Girls' College (who helped organise the day) said the students really enjoyed the goal-setting activities, and some were heard to say at the end of the day 'That was cool'.

What’s been happening?

Career Services consultant Michele Boivin recently presented to approximately 90 teacher trainees at the Otago University College of Education.

The purpose of this was to introduce teachers to their roles as career advisers to their future students, to familiarise them with the Career Services website (specifically the 'Educators and practitioners' section), and to provide an overview of career education in schools.

This was well received by the new graduates, giving them a good understanding of the way career education programmes are run in school.
