Careers capability building session
This session with the Youth Workers Collective in Hastings focused on:
- understanding the role of career planning as a lever to increase motivation in their clients
- why careers is very much a part of the work they do
- how they can create career conversations in their everyday work with youth and encourage them to set and work towards career goals.
This helped to set a clear context for an overview of the great tools and resources available to them on the Career Services’ website.

Professional development for career education leaders and teachers
Based on discussions held with the local CATE executive, Chuni Bhikha and Liz Gray developed a programme to meet the interests of CATE teachers and also participating Year 7 and 8 teachers. The programme, held on 18 September, included:
- An overview of organisational changes at Career Services, and how the Wellington office was looking to work with schools in the future.
- A presentation by Sabrina Pick and Russell Browning about the updated 'Educators and practitioners' section on the Career Services website, as well as the career practitioners’ forum and My Career Space.
- A session with Jocelyn Anton from the Ministry of Education on career education and pathways. This included the ministry’s ideas on how schools could deliver career education to students, staff and parents.
- An activity-driven, hands-on preview of the new careers online information section on the TKI curriculum sight, led by Catherine van Hale.
It was good to work with so many dedicated professionals with similar goals – teachers wanting to provide the best support and guidance for their students on their career journeys.
