Transcript: Cinead is trying hairdressing
Cinead, student: My name is Cinead. I am 16 years old and I am from Avondale College. I am interested in hairdressing because I enjoy cutting hair and styling it.
Clinton Randell, TV presenter: Geoff Widing is a salon manager and will be mentoring Cinead on numerous aspects of the job.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: So, this is the first day of your hairdressing career?
Cinead, student: Yes.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: Great. We'll get you to just, basically, have an overview of how the salon works.
Clinton Randell, TV presenter: Cinead is thrown straight into it. In such a busy salon, there is no time to stand around idle.
Geoff is showing Cinead how to sweep the floor of the salon.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: At that speed, so you really want to be kind of...
Clinton Randell, TV presenter: A key job for the apprentices is to pamper the clients with coffee.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: Is that the first espresso that you ever made?
Cinead, student: Yeah.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: Awesome. Geoff tasting the coffee. Real good.
Clinton Randell, TV presenter: Another essential part of the job is people skills.
Girl from salon: You've gotta be able to communicate. So you've gotta, yeah, force yourself to get in there. It makes the whole day, like - if you're happy, your clients are happy and everybody is happy. Especially within the team as well. It's important that everybody pulls together and just has that good environment, you know.
Clinton Randell, TV presenter: Cinead has just completed her first hair wash. So, how was the experience for Geoff?
Geoff Widing, salon manager: It's a really tricky thing to watch someone's hair at the basin. It's not easy, the angles are all different. It's really funny. I felt that she was really aware that she had a human being in front of her. She has been really careful so yeah, I thought that she was really fantastic.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: So that's the end of your time with us. How have you found it?
Cinead, student: Really good, interesting.
Geoff Widing, salon manager: As far as we are concerned, when we see people that have your calibre, we're really keen to employ people like you. I think you really fit in really well and you've melded in really well with the team in a really short time. So yeah, we'd love to have you apply for a job with us when you graduate from school.
Cinead, student: Geoff offering me a job was pretty overwhelming and really good to know that I am suitable for the job. Yeah, I think I will be really interested in taking him up on that offer. Yeah.
