Quiz - What kind of study or training is best for me?

You need to consider many factors when choosing a course of study or training. This quiz is designed to help you decide on the type of training provider that might suit you best. This quiz does not provide guidance on what topic you should study.

What's your preferred learning style?

Being shown how to do something, and then trying it myself with some supervision
Researching and reading, theorising and discussing
A mix of being shown how to do something, trying it out, and talking to someone who has done it
Working with others on the same problem – I don’t like going it alone
Finding information on the Internet at a time and place that suits me, so learning can fit in with my lifestyle

Where do you prefer to learn?

Outside, doing practical things with an end result that I can see
In libraries, lecture theatres and places where I can discuss, read and research ideas
In a relaxed environment with lots of discussion, where I can ask the teacher when I need help or guidance
In a family-friendly environment where I learn from others' life experiences
At my laptop or home computer, in an environment and at a time that suits me

What kinds of people do you want to teach you?

People who are there to show me what I need to learn, when I need to learn it
Experts in the field, who have studied and researched the topic
Experienced people with industry knowledge, who communicate in creative ways
People who relate to me and share their knowledge, friendship and culture
People who I can ask questions of, but who generally leave me to manage my learning in my own time

What type of assessment suits you best?

I like to show what I can do through demonstrations of practical know-how and skills
I thrive on the pressure of exams and having a final grade that’s ranked against other students
I like to show what I can do through a mixture of written/creative work and practical assignments
I like to be observed over time or keep a journal, rather than have one moment of assessment, which I could stuff up!
Assessments I can complete in my own time, at my own speed

How long do you want to spend in study or training?

I’d prefer to be working on the job and learning as I go. I don’t want to spend time just studying when I could be earning money
I’d like to be doing some solid study for the next three or four years, maybe longer
I could handle one or two years, but after that I’ll be ready to get out into the workforce and apply my skills
Studying is pretty new to me, so I think I would try six months to a year and then see if I wanted to carry on further
As long as my training can fit around my other commitments, and I can pick up papers when it suits me, I don’t mind how long it takes me to complete the course

How much are you prepared to pay for your training?

Ideally, I would like to see if my employer could pay for my training
I’d expect to pay between $4,000 and $8,000 a year, perhaps more depending on the qualification
I’d be comfortable with between $2,500 and $5,000 a year
I'd prefer to do a course with minimal or no fees
I'm prepared to pay some costs towards fees but I expect them to be reasonable, and I want to know I'm getting value for money

What's your highest qualification?

NCEA maths, English and/or science to Level 1, and I’m between 16 and 21 years old
NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance OR I’m an adult student over 20 years old
NCEA Level 2 or 3 OR I'm an adult student over 20 years old
No school qualifications, but lots of life experience!
I have some secondary and tertiary qualifications but I got them a while ago. I am picking up study while I’m at home with children OR while working full time

What sort of employment opportunities do you want once you finish studying or training?

I hope to progress to higher pay and more responsibility in the industry I already work in
I'm prepared to market my skills to a potential employer once I graduate. I know it’ll be competitive but I'm open to a number of options
I'm prepared to start at the bottom and work my way up, but I know that my qualification has industry recognition so that should count for something
I hope to carry on studying towards a higher qualification, and get help and support to improve my job prospects
I know that upskilling makes me more employable in the future. I hope to have more confidence to apply for a new job
