Modern Apprenticeships

The Modern Apprenticeship programme:

  • is aimed at people between 16 and 21 years old
  • allows young people to gain skills and a qualification while working
  • is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC)
  • was introduced by the government in 2000.

Modern Apprenticeships:

  • can take between two to four years to complete
  • can be undertaken in a wide range of industries (eg graphic communication, boat building, forestry, hairdressing).

A Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator helps to link apprentices with their chosen industry and manages the relationship between the apprentice and employer.

The qualification gained at the end of the apprenticeship depends on the chosen industry. In most cases, this will be a Level 3 or 4 national certificate.

Who is a Modern Apprenticeship for?

An apprentice in the Seafood industry is testing the fish-fingers she has made.
Could a Modern Apprenticeship be the right choice for your child?

Modern Apprentices need to:

  • be aged between 16 and 21 years old when starting the apprenticeship
  • meet the entry requirements of the particular industry (a Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator can help to find out more)
  • be ready to start working towards a national certificate at Levels 3 and 4.

What does a Modern Apprenticeship cost?

The costs of a Modern Apprenticeship are minimal. Course fees are kept down because Modern Apprenticeships are subsidised by the government through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). There may, however, be some course-related costs for NZQA registration, training materials and the support from the ITO.

Modern Apprenticeship fees may vary. The best way to find out about the fees is to talk to the employer, Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator or ITO.
