Sometimes it’s hard to engage your child in a career conversation

Sometimes you may feel frustrated when you try to engage with your child, as they may obviously not want to talk to you. If your child is negative or unresponsive when you try to have a career conversation, it may not be an appropriate time. Remain positive and reassuring though; your child may bring the conversation up with you later when the time is right.

Reassuring things you could say to your child are:

  • “If you need any help with exploring your career ideas, you can always ask me.”
  • “You should know that I want you to be happy, whatever you decide to do.”
  • “I have had a few career changes in my life and am now really happy. You most likely don’t want advice from me but if you ever want to find out more, I’m here.”

It’s important for your teenager to know that you are always there to support and help them when necessary. They will even hear that when texting, although they may appear distracted.
