Driving along in the car – an opportunity to catch up
Life can be hectic, and often the only time to catch up with family members is when you’re in the car on the way somewhere. This can be a great opportunity to have a quick chat to your kids about careers and dreams. Generally, young people don’t like to be interrogated, so the more casual and indirect the conversation the better. Try to avoid direct questions at the start. Here are some possible questions you could try:
- “Hey, what’s your dream job?”
- “What would you really like to do after you finish school?”
- “If you could do anything at all, what would it be?”
- “Have you already started thinking about what kind of job you would like to do?”
- “If you knew you couldn’t fail, what job would you do?”
If you feel that the conversation is not going anywhere, you may want to drop the subject but let your child know that you are always there if they need you.
