Ray Pang from Cheng Du, China
Ray Pang was an experienced medical equipment salesman in China, but wasn’t sure if he would be able to continue his career after he migrated to New Zealand in August 2006.
“I was not quite sure at that time that I could do sales in a country with a different culture, using a different language,” says Ray.
He also thought that he needed to update his job-hunting skills. “I worked for the same employer for the past 14 years before I came to New Zealand, so I had no idea about job seeking even in China.
“I went to Auckland Regional Migrant Services first, and they had a course to help immigrants look for jobs.”
Through them, Ray got in touch with a Career Services consultant and attended three one-to-one sessions. “She gave me some personal advice, and helped me out a lot with my CV and interview skills, and she even gave me a rehearsal. It was excellent! I think I gained enough confidence through that period.”
After the training, and with his professional experience and background, it took Ray only two months to secure a comparable medical equipment sales job with national responsibility. He is happy in his new role, and says he is very impressed with Career Services’ work.
“It’s really valuable for any immigrant. I even said that if you need any assistance from me to help other immigrants, I would like to do that.”
