Career plan for teen wanting apprenticeship

Career plan example for a 17-year-old wanting an electrician's apprenticeship

My goal: To start an Electrician's Modern Apprenticeship in 18 months

What I can do now: Contact my local Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator to get advice and information on how to get an apprenticeship

Possible sequence of steps:

  1. Contact my local Tertiary Education Commission office (look through blue Government phone listings in the phone book) for the details of the local Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator for the electrical industry.
  2. Contact five local employers to see if they take on Modern Apprentices (within one month).
  3. Ask employers what skills, personal qualities, relevant experience or qualifications they expect from potential Modern Apprentices.
  4. Complete a summary of the information from the employers and Modern Apprenticeship co-ordinator for advice about what I need to do (one month after step 1).

Depending on the information collected above, other steps may include:

  1. Contacting a local employer about voluntary work experience or possibly part-time casual work.
  2. Contacting places that offer electrical pre-employment courses to find out costs, start dates and the content of the course.
  3. Contacting StudyLink for information about student loans and allowances.
  4. Applying for a course and enrolling.
