Returning to work career plan

Career plan example for someone returning to work after a break

A 32-year-old who has had some time out of the workforce and is thinking of re-entering the workforce in two years.

My goal: A full-time retail assistant position in two years' time.

What I can do now: Contact local retailers to find out what particular skills, qualities and qualifications they look for.

Possible sequence of steps:

  1. Look through the vacancy section for retail assistant positions I would like to apply for in the future (over the next month).
  2. Compile a list of relevant questions to ask employers about what skills, personal qualities, relevant experience or qualifications they expect from potential employees (within two months).
  3. Contact employers to arrange informal chat about advertised positions (within three months).
  4. Record and summarise all relevant information from employers (within four months).
  5. Talk it over with partner (within six months).
  6. Consider undertaking some form of work experience as this is often the way people gain employment.  Make a list of people I know who may be able to help me and start to network (within 12 months).
  7. Research suitable retail courses and enrol in a course (within 12 months).
